Best Halloween Books to get you ready for spooky season.

Can you believe that while Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, I've only ever written one post on Halloween movies? Today that's going to change! I'm going to talk about some of the best Halloween books to get you ready for spooky season.

Let's get right into it!

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

β€œFairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”

Neil Gaiman, Coraline

I did mention the Coraline movie in my Halloween movies post, but the book is honestly just as good. It's meant to be a children's book, so it's a quick read. While it's originally targeted towards children, I feel like you can get something from the book no matter how old you are.

If you don't know what the book's about, the story follows a young girl named Coraline. Her parents and her just moved, and just like any young girl would do, she's goes exploring. While looking around the house, she finds a strange door. A door, that when you enter, she enters another flat. A flat that looks incredibly similar to hers, but it's different. Everything's better, and there's a new mother & father that want her to stay with them, and be their new little girl. Obviously everything is not what is seems, and Coraline has to figure it out for herself. I don't want to give too much away, so that's all I'm going to say.

I highly recommend it, and you can get yourself a copy of this Halloween book here!

In the Woods by Tana French

"β€œI had learned early to assume something dark and lethal hidden at the heart of anything I loved. When I couldn't find it, I responded, bewildered and wary, in the only way I knew how: by planting it there myself.”

Tana French, In the Woods

I read this book a few years ago, when I was starting to dip my toes into adult books. This story is actually the first part of a series. While it is a series, the books can all be read stand-alone.

The book takes place in two different times periods, in 1984 & in 2004 (their present time). In 1984, 3 kids were hanging out in the woods, and when their mothers call them to come home when it was getting late, none of them appear. After the police is called, they eventually only find a single terror-filled child. He has blood stained shoes, and cannot remember the details over what happened.

Twenty years later, a 12 year old girl is found murdered in the same small town outside of Dublin. The surviving boy is now a detective, and is placed on this case. None of his fellow detectives are away of his connection to this case & this town, and it's his secret to keep. What's weird about the case is how erringly similar to the other unsolved mystery. Ryan, our detective, will have to delve deep into his mind to try to recall the memories from his past in order to solve the case from his present.

I would say this book is an extremely chilling mystery, and definitely a good place to start with Halloween reads! If you want to check out this book, you can grab one here.

The Cellar by Natasha Preston

β€œGood evening, Flowers,” he said and gave us a charming, this is all totally normal smile. That was how he got away with it. He looked so friendly you just instantly trusted himβ€”unless you were down here, of course. β€œGood evening,” they replied in unison.”

Natasha Preston, The Cellar

I've read a few of Natasha Preston's books, and while most of them are okay, none of them are as good, as the Cellar. This book takes place in the town of Long Thorpe, where nothing ever happens. Well nothing, until a 16 year old is kidnapped. She's gone without a trace, and her family & police officers have no idea where she had gone.

So she spends months in the basement of her kidnapper with a few other girls. If you want to know how this book ends, I definitely recommend giving it a read. This book doesn't have a detective/mystery feel to it. Most of the book is from the perspective of the kidnapped girl, Summer. The book leave you constantly wondering what's going to happen next! If you're interested in this book, you can check it out here!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling (Book #2)

β€œIt is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I'm definitely not going to take a long time talking about it, since most of you shouldn't be surprised that a Harry Potter book is on my list. I feel like some of the books remind me of different times of the year. The first book reminds me of Christmas, while the second book is hands down a perfect Halloween book.

Since most of you know what Harry Potter is about, I'm not going to summarize it. If you want to get the whole box set (if you don't have it already), you can grab it here. If you specifically want to get the second book (even though I highly recommend reading the series in order), you can get yourself a copy here!

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness halloween books melina elisa blog

β€œYou do not write your life with words...You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what youΒ do.”

-Patrick Ness, A Monster Calls

I wrote a whole blog post about how much I love this book, so I don't really want to talk about it too much. If you're interesting in learning more about the book, check out my post! If you want to read this book, you can check it out here.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

β€œHollowness: that I understand. I'm starting to believe that there isn't anything you can do to fix it. That's what I've taken from the therapy sessions: the holes in your life are permanent. You have to grow around them, like tree roots around concrete; you mold yourself through the gaps”

Paula Hawkins, The Girl on the Train

I actually reviewed this book in one of my earlier book review posts, so if you want to know more about the book, I recommend doing so here. This book is also a mystery, but from the perspective of a drunk scorned ex-wife. It took a little while to get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down until I finished it!

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

β€œSometimes if you let people do things to you, you're really doing it to them.”

Gillian Flynn, Sharp Objects

I have watched the show and read the book, and they're both amazingly done. As always, the book has a little more detail, but they're both really good. I also did a review on this book and rated it 4 1/2 stars! This was not like The Girl on the Train, because it took me no time at all to get into it. I was sucked in from the first page I read.

It's a chilling story about a reporter going back to her hometown after there has been some children murdered. The reporter herself has had a difficult upbringing, and a lot of dark family history. Going back to her hometown is not a easy feat.

She quickly gets sucked into the drama of the town and her family, while slowly unraveling what's happening. If you want to read my full thoughts, I suggest checking out my full review! Whether you read my review or not, know that I highly recommend this book.
