Black-Owned Beauty Brands You Should Check Out!

With all the heaviness going on in America right now, I knew I couldn't go on blogging about my life as if nothing was happening. I wanted to create a post that supports the #blacklivesmatters movement. One of the ways to support is by supporting brands owned by black people! In this post I'm going to talk about 7 black-owned beauty brands that are killing it right now. Let's get right into it!

Alori Collection

Alori is a company co-owned by Alo, who is Mexican, and Ripley, who is African American. It is a brand that specializes in brush cleansers, makeup brushes, and as of recently, hand sanitizer.

I originally found out about Alori because of following Alo on snapchat. She used to do the best snapchat stories reviewing products. I trusted everything she recommended, so when she said she was going to team up with Ripley to create brush cleansers, I knew I was going to buy it.

The Brush Cleansers

I've been using Alori brush cleansers for over a year now, and I have to say, they have completely changed the game for me. I used to dread washing my makeup brushes. I would take way longer than I would ever dare admit to clean them.

When I saw that Alori was coming out with a wild mint scented brush cleanser in March of 2019, I knew I needed to purchase it. It might have been on of the best decisions I could have made. Not only did it make my brushes smell amazing (just a light scent, not overbearing at all), but it was so easy!

I used to struggle to get some of the red shades off of my brush bristles, but once I started using their cleanser, I had no trouble at all! It literally took seconds. Since then, I have bought myself about 6 other cleansers (I have only used about 2-3, but I have to have backups!) and have given each of my close friends one as well!

The Brushes

While I've only been talking up their brush cleansers, their brushes are also amazing. I own both sets of brushes they've released since starting their brand, and they are oh so good. They are really good quality, and even though I've washed them a bunch of times, I haven't lost any bristles on any of the brushes! They may look a little pricey, but I promise you they're worth it.

Whenever one of my friends borrow one of their brushes to do their makeup, they're always so impressed with them. They're always asking what brand it is, and are always surprised they haven't heard of Alori Collection! These brushes are so good at what they do, especially how they deposit eye shadows! They blend things flawlessly and just put the colors exactly where you want them to go. I'm telling you, pure perfection in a brush.

If you're looking for a small indie-brand to check out and support, I definitely think you should check out Alori Collection.

Coloured Raine Cosmetics

Coloured Raine is a brand that is owned by Loraine R. Dowdy, a woman of Carribean descent. I actually found out about Coloured Raine from Alo (from Alori Collection). She was always using their eye shadows in her Snapchat stories. Their individual shadows always looked so pigmented and beautiful, that I knew I had to get my hands on them.

I was so excited to find out that they actually sell Coloured Raine in my local Target (sorry I checked on the Target website and they don't have that many options)! I bought myself 2 individual eye shadows, and I was not disappointed. They were so smooth & buttery. While they were extremely pigmented, they didn't need a lot of work to blend them out. They blended like a dream!

Since buying those 2 single eye shadows, she has expanded her brand to having full eye shadow palettes, a variety of lip products, foundation, highlighters, beauty sponges, eye brushes, and a few other makeup accessories!

While I can only speak on the quality of the eye shadows, I've heard nothing but good things about the brand & their products! I definitely recommend you checking out the Coloured Raine Website!

Beauty Bakerie

Beauty Bakerie is another good one. The company is owned by Cashmere Nicole, a black single mother & cancer survivor. I've been a fan of Beauty Bakerie every since Jeffree Star did a review on their setting powder. After that Tati Westbrook also did a review on the whole brand. I honestly fell in love with the brands concept. Everything is baking themed, which is honestly so cute and unique!

They do an amazing job of catering to all skin tones, and just come at beauty from such a fun perspective. I have their Flour setting powder, and I'm obsessed. The fact that it comes in a little flour bag is super creative and cute. I actually mentioned their setting powder in my 2019 all-time beauty favorites post!

They have continued to expand their brand, and some of their best selling products are the Flour Setting Powder, Wake & Bake Hydrating Oil, Aquaglass Foundation, the different variations of the Lip Whips, and the List goes on!

I have only tried their Matte Lip Whips and the Translucent Flour Setting Powder, but I like them both a lot! My next purchases from them (after I use up some of my current makeup stash) are definitely going to be the Wake & Bake Hydrating Oil, Instabake Aqua Glass Foundation & their concealer!

I've been a fan of Beauty Bakerie for a while, and definitely recommend checking them out on their site and at Ulta!

Juvia's Place

I have mentioned Juvia's Place more than a few times on my blog before (I have a whole post to how much I love their brushes, and have another post talking about my favorite affordable brushes), so it should come to no surprise to those of you reading my blog for a while now. The brains behind Juvia's Place is Chichi Eburu, a Nigerian-born wife & mother of two.

Alo introduced me to her brushes, (the ones linked are the exact first brush set I got from them). They were the first time I spent money on brushes that weren't extremely inexpensive, like the ones from ELF. This was the first time that I realized that having good quality brushes made a difference in the way makeup looked.

From there I ended up purchases two more sets of brushes from Juvia's Place, the purple set and the pink set. I ended up loving those just as much as the red ones (even though the red ones are still going to be the brush set I'll recommend to people).

Now I know that so far I've only been talking about their brushes, but I haven't even mentioned how amazing their eye shadow palettes are. They are SO pigmented. She has amazing color stories, which are super unique. She has beautiful neutral palettes & extremely vibrant and fun palettes.

You can find Juvia's Place on their website & at Ulta, so definitely check them out!

Briogeo

Until I was doing the research for this post, I honestly didn't know that Briogeo was a black-owned brand! Nancy Twine is the owner of Briogeo.

Briogeo is just one of those companies that get everything right. Their shampoo and conditioners are amazing. You can't go wrong with trying their Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioner & Leave-In Mask. All the products are really good for your hair. There is no sulfates, silicone or parabens in their products & on top of that Sephora rates them an overall clean brand.

While their products are pricey, their products are quality! I've gotten their deep conditioner a few times as a "treat myself" product. Since I've decided to cut back from using plastic in my daily hygiene routine, I have strayed away from using their shampoos and conditioners (even though I've heard nothing but good things about both their Superfoods Line & their Nourishing Line)

While I haven't tried all of their products, I have an really good experiences with the two that I have tried. If you want to check out their products you can go on their own website or check out Sephora!

Fenty Beauty

Fenty is the brand I'm going to spend the least amount of time talking about. Almost everyone knows that Rihanna is owner of Fenty Beauty. Rihanna took the world by storm when she launched her brand with a foundation that had an amazing selection of shades for her foundation. With 40 foundations to choose from, there was a shade guaranteed to match anyone.

It was a huge success, and since then she has expanded her brand to include everything you could think of. While not every product she launches hits the mark, I would say that almost all of her products are successes! It's very difficult to please everyone in the beauty world, but she makes it all look so easy.

While I have definitely not tried some products from her latest launch (super interested in those cream blushes & bronzers), I have to say that I was a huge fan of her Kilawatt Freestyle Highlighter & her Cream Bronzer Sticks!

If you haven't tried Fenty Beauty yet and you're interested in their products, you can find them on their own website and on Sephora!

Pat McGrath Labs

The final brand I'm going to talk about today is Pat McGrath Labs, owned the famous makeup artist Pat McGrath herself! When I think about products that preform really well, and has luxurious & overall stunning packaging, I think of Pat McGrath Labs.

I would say that while I actually don't own anything by Pat McGrath (her eye shadow palettes are just so expensive, I'm looking for an achievement...or a really good sale), I had to add her on the list.

Every time I'm at Sephora I pass by all the Pat McGrath palettes, and I just swatch all the shades. Pat McGrath has this unique magical power. You can look at a shadow in the pan and think the shade will look a certain way, but once you actually swatch it, it looks completely different. Some have a special shift that depending which way you look at it, it'll look a certain way. Others just look so magnificent on the eyes, that you can't believe the shade looked so normal in the pan!

I used to want one of the 6-pan Mothership palettes, but they discontinued the one I wanted. Now I'm eyeing the Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette anddd the Mothership VIII Palette that comes out later this month!

If you can afford to splurge and get yourself some Pat McGrath Palettes and their lip products, definitely do so. They're just really quality & the presentation with the packaging is impeccable.

You can get Pat McGrath products on their own website and on Sephora!
