MELINA’S BOOK CLUB | #16
I'm posting this a little later than usual, but it's cause my mind's been buzzing with thoughts. My favorite pieces to write a personal thought pieces, and so when I get the inspiration, I love to be able to sit down and break down my thoughts. To take a step away from these deeper, yet sometimes draining posts, I'm back with another book club post!
currently reading:
I know Straight Up Love has to do with pregnancy, and for whatever reason I'm so over those plot lines. It's such a shame because I actually purchased this e-book!
what i’m going to review today:
Fraternize by Rachel Van Dyken -★★★
"Sometimes the only way to get over things is to walk through them, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it on your own.”
-Franternize, Rachel Van Dyken
The book follows Emerson whose life long dream was to be a professional cheerleader. As someone who's a bit larger than the average cheerleader, she has had to work twice as hard to prove her worth.
She finally makes it onto the team of her dreams, but little does she know that so does her ex-high school best friend, Miller. The best friend that she was totally in love with. The best friend who left her and she never heard from again.
From the moment they lock eyes again, the past passion that they both had for each other comes back in an instant. Even with all the words left unsaid.
On the other side of things is Grant. The known fuck boy in football. He immediately shows an interest in Emerson. The surprising thing? Grant is nothing but respectful and a great friend to Emerson. While Miller is tackling his internal thoughts and feelings for Emerson, Emerson is slowly opening up to Grant. If you want to find out what happens between this love triangle, definitely give this book a read! I know that there's at least one other book to the series, but I knew that I liked where the book ended. I don't think I would continue to read the series, but I still rate this 3 stars!
If you're into love triangles, you would probably like this one!
Any Red-Blooded Girl (The Flora Fontain Files #1) by Maggie Bloom -★ 1/2
This story follows Flora, a young 15 year old, who goes on a camping trip with her family. From the beginning I didn't like how the book flowed. It was extremely choppy. I like lil' fluff romances, so I thought that I would enjoy this book. I could not be further from the truth.
I think I got about 25% done with the book, when I realized that this book was not going to get any better. At least I was not going to like it. I think there are way better things to spend your time reading than this book. Definitely do not recommend.
Rule #9 by Sheri Duff - ★★★ 1/2
I actually liked this book. From the cover of the the book, you would assume that this book was going to be a full blown romance novel. I actually found that to be far from the truth.
I actually really liked the family dynamics in this book. The story follows 16 year old Massie Trask. Even though her parents had divorced a while ago, she didn't want a new step-mother or the new grandfather that came with it, but you don't always get what you want.
Sooner than she could imagine, the wedding is here, and she'd rather be anywhere than there. The only interesting thing that came from that night, was the boy who asked her to dance.
She continued to remind herself that all she had to do was get through the wedding and she wouldn't have to deal with her father, her new step-mom, or her new "grandfather". Little does she know that her mother has to take a 3 week work trip, and isn't going to allow her to stay alone for that long.
She's forced to live in her father's house with all these strangers. Throughout the story Massie has to come up with rules in order to deal with these strangers that her father has forced upon her.
Now I'm telling you, this is definitely a book you should read. It was super cute and really well written! Definitely an overall enjoyable story, and I recommend this one 100%.
Beautiful Criminal by Geneva Lee - ★★★★
“There’s no use apologizing for life or tragedy. Both are inevitable.”
Beautiful Criminal, Geneva Lee
I'm a sucker for anything that has a mystery in it, and this book was no exception. The book takes place in Vegas, the City of Sin. Well, more like right outside of Vegas, in Belle Mère, one of the most exclusive areas in Nevada.
Emma Southerly has realized from a young age that in a world with too much money and not enough rules, anything goes.
With her divorced parents, her two world could not be any more different. Her mother, who married rich after divorcing her father and pays for her to go to the Belle Mère private school. Then there's her father who owns one of the most famous pawn shops in Vegas, but still struggles to pay the bills.
One thing's for sure, when the West's largest and most exclusive party of the year happens, the last thing she belongs is there. Yet there she is, it's just a party, what could go wrong?
After running into her ex with his new girlfriend, and losing her best friend in the crowd, she meets Jameson. The mysterious boy from the party. She breaks all her rules by spending the night with him, and yet she doesn't want to walk away.
The morning after, she realizes he's gone, but there's a bigger problem. A dead body's been found, and Jamson is the number one suspect.
This book has a lot of twists and turns, but overall a very enjoyable read. It's part of a 3-part series, and while I think by the end of it, it's a little drawn out, this first book was extremely well written and sucked me in from the first page! I definitely recommend checking this story out.
