Melina's Book Club #28
I know I always take too long to update you guys on what I'm reading (I'm sorry, I promise!). That's exactly why I update you guys on what I'm reading through my Fridaze posts. It's a much more current and accurate update on what I'm reading! I sometimes get through 3-4 books a week, so updating that monthly was getting to be difficult. Enough chit chat, grab a cup of coffee/tea and let's chat books!
Currently Reading:
I used to be so good at reading multiple books at once, but I've really slowed my roll with that one. I'm currently only reading these two books at the moment. The One is actually next month's book club book! I only read the first couple pages, but I have a feeling it's going to be pretty good.
I actually read the Fallen Crest High a while back, I reread it over the winter, and I decided that I would continue the series this time around, which is why I'm starting Fallen Crest now. I feel like it's a little too much drama, but it's not a bad read. Pretty quick.
What I’m Reviewing Today:
Lost In Me | Something Real | Something Reckless | The Hating Game
Lost in me (Here and Now #1) by Lexi Ryan - ★★★
“I love you, Hanna,” he says softly, and more surprising than the words is this feeling in my chest. As if something there knows what he says is true, even if my mind can’t remember how we got here. “I…”
Lexi Ryan, Lost in Me
I don't remember why I started reading this, because by reading the summary, it would never be a book I would reach for. I seem to be on a huge Lexi Ryan kick, so maybe I read some of her other stuff before starting this one.
This story follows Hanna who wakes up, and finds out that she forgot everything that has happened in the past year. All she knows is that she's a lot thinner than she used to be, and is somehow engaged to her longtime crush Max. No one seems to have the answers, except Nate. He seems to know more about her than anyone around her.
While I occasionally like Hanna, I also didn't care for how much people walked over her. Her thought process was a bit frustrating, and she just wasn't my favorite main character.
Nate on the other hand. I loved him! He wasn't perfect by any means, I was just a lot more interested in him and his thoughts over Hanna. It's still a pretty quick read, with lots of twists, turns & drama. For that reason only, I actually ended up continuing the series.
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne - ★★★★
“Books were, and always would be, something a little magic and something to respect.”
Sally Thorne, The Hating Game
This story follows Lucy, who's the people pleaser, the one everyone gets along with at Bexley & Gamin, the company she works for. Well, everyone except Joshua. They're always playing silly games with one another to get the upper hand on the other.
The stakes become much larger when there's a promotion on the line. One that can make one the boss of the other. Even though she's trying her hardest to get the promotions, why does she start having fantasies about Josh, or why does she start dressing up for work like she's going on a date? And what about that kiss they share on the elevator? Maybe they don't hate each other as much as they thought.
Now this is a book I can 100% get behind. Right from the beginning I knew I was going to love this book. Firstly this book is a co-workers to lovers/enemies to lovers book, which we all know I'm a sucker for. Secondly, the characters were quirky, funny, and made you want to keep reading. If you read any books from this list, you have to read THIS one!
Something Reckless (Reckless & Real #1) by Lexi Ryan - ★★★
“Is there a ladylike way to say, “Hey, you seem a little down. Want me to ride you until you can’t remember her name?”
Lexi Ryan, Something Reckless
This was definitely the reason I read Lost in Me by Lexi Ryan. Right from reading the summary, this plot sucked me in. This story follows Lizzy. Lizzy signs up for a dating site, where she's not allowed to send or receive photos or videos with a person until they've hit a certain benchmark in their relationship. She's looking for love, so when she starts chatting with riverrat69, she's clicks immediately with him.
The whole mystery of letting Lizzy trying to figure it out who she's messaging, plus the flashbacks of her life, keep me interested enough to keep reading. While Sam is a problematic character from the beginning, I really try to root for him. I have a love/hate feel for him. There are some times where I really hate him, and somehow it all turns around in a way, where I don't end up hating the book entirely? The book was good enough for me to read the second one!
Something Real (Reckless & Real #2) by Lexi Ryan - ★★★
“Is this about her, or is this about you and me?"
"There is no you and me," she says. "We both know that."
"There's so much you and me, there's no air left when we share a room. There's always you and me.”
Lexi Ryan, Something Real
Without giving too much away, this book is a continuation of the Something Reckless book. It continues on where Something Reckless leaves off. I will immediately say that you root for Liz a lot more in this book. I feel like it was a little difficult to relate, or even like her in the first book. She's matured a lot in this book, and I was on her side in this one.
Sam was someone I had a little more complicated feelings for. The last book left me so frustrated with him, it was a little hard to get over them throughout this book. I really disliked him and most of his decisions in this one. These feelings do finally start to shift 3/4 into the book, but this book is ehh overall. I had to know how their story was going to end, but this book was definitely nothing special. I'm surprised so many people rated it so highly on Goodreads!
I didn't hate it, but also think there are a lot better things you can be reading.
