melina's book club pt. 8
I'm back again with another book club post! I hope you've been either keeping up with them, or reading some of the books I've recommended yourself! When people tell me they read a book because of me, it literally warms my heart.
I hope you're having a wonderful February! I can't believe that the time has flown the way it has, it feels like only yesterday I was making one of these book club posts. Alas, it's been a full month. So let's get right into it! Like always if you don't want to read the full post, you can click on the image of the book you want to read about, and it'll take you to that part of the post!
we were liars by e. lockhart -★★★ 1/2
This is one of those books that everyone was talking about last year. It was a book I was super interested in reading, and when Barnes and Nobles' sale went on, I saw that this book was only $5!
Now this book was super interesting. I would consider this a mystery with some romantic moments. I will start off by saying that I've never read a book like this. I felt so many emotions while reading it. I was confused, curious, surprised, angry, upset, and then felt at piece.
Most people tell me that this is a book that you're either going to love or hate, but in reality, I felt like I was in a place right in the middle? I really loved the concept of the story. I do have to say, that I wasn't a fan of the style of writing? There were a lot of metaphors and, in my opinion, lots of unnecessary side stories.
The story follows Cadence, who used to spend every summer with her family on their island. Something happened one summer, and everything changed. She doesn't remember what exactly happened, and no one will tell her. Right after the incident, which she doesn't remember, she started to get migraines. Finally two years after the incident she gets the chance to go back to the island for the summer. She's on the hunt to figure out what happened during that summer two years ago. Slowly, she starts to regain her memories.
While I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style, I still suggest most people should read it. As someone who reads a lot, it's rare that I read something that catches me off guard. Not only that, but I've never read a book with a similar plot! Definitely recommend! You can get yourself a copy of this book US: here or UK: here.
the way to game the walk of shame by jenn p nguyen - ★★★
The second book I read recently was this one. I was looking for a nice and easy read, and this was another book that I got from the Barnes and Noble sale! While I've read books with similar plots before, I liked Jenn's retelling of this story.
Taylor was known as the girl who got straight A's. The ice queen. One day her best friend convinces her to go to this party. She ends up getting trashed, because she's a lightweight, and wakes up the next morning in Evan's bed. Evan, the bad boy surfer. While nothing scandalous happened between them that night, someone sees her walking out of his house.
When school starts again, the rumor mill is talking about how Taylor was Evan's latest fling. It ruins her reputation, and she starts to get severely bullied. Her and her best friend come up with an idea to solve all her problems. She has to fake date Evan. Everyone will get off her back if they're actually dating! This story follows their fake dating journey.
It's a cute story, and a super quick read. I do like the way Jen write's so it was extremely enjoyable. While the plot wasn't super original, it did have some twists and turns that keeps the story fresh. If you want to read this book from yourself, you can US: here or UK: here!
the boy most likely to by huntley fitzpatrick - ★★
I've read My Life Next Door by Huntly Fitzpatrick, and I was a huge fan of it. I thought it was cute and extremely enjoyable. I decided to pick up this one from Thriftbooks. I have to say I was extremely disappointed by this book. I felt like it really lacked character development. What made it even more disappointing was the fact that I really liked the plot!
I felt like it has such an original plot line, which is kind of hard to have in a contemporary romance novel, but it did! This story follows two characters, Tim and Alice. Alice has the big family, which is falling apart. Her dad's in the hospital and the bills are stacking up. She's already delayed her acceptance to Nursing school in New York once, but what is she supposed to do? She can't leave her family behind, especially when they need her.
Tim on the other hand, has always been known as the boy to "need a liver transplant", "drive his car into his house", and "find the liquor cabinet blindfolded". Tim went to AA and came out of it sober. It was too late though, his dad has had enough of his shit. With Tim being kicked out of the house and being a high school drop out, he had no where to go. Luckily his best friend gave him a place to stay, in the garage of their house.
Alice was definitely not happy when she found out her younger brother's best friend was moving into their house. She knew Tim was a mess, and she definitely didn't need another person to take care of. Somehow they start catching feelings for each other.
This story follows their journey separately and together at the same time. I loved the plot, but I hated the lack of character development! I felt like there it was lacking something. The characters didn't have much depth, and because of that I didn't fall in love with the story. While this story wasn't my cup of tea, and I don't personally recommend it, maybe one of you guys would like it, so you can get a copy of it US: here or UK: here.

I had to read We Were Liars for university and I have to say I didn’t enjoy it that much; it’s definitely worth a read because of how different it is and the plot twists, but the writing style really didn’t work for me. However that may be because I was obligated to read it and study it! I’m intrigued by The Way to Game the Walk of Shame because it sounds like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and I really enjoyed that film (also want to get round to reading that!)
I agree, the writing style wasn't really my taste, there were a lot of weird metaphors and those fairy tales were definitely not for me. Towards the end of the book, I actually skipped a few of them!
Nonetheless I thought the plot was so different and enjoyable, that I still rated it as well as I did. I wanted to keep reading, and finding out more. Like you said, since you read it for school, it might have made even less enjoyable because you had to dissect it, instead of thoroughly enjoy it.
There are definitely some elements of ATBILB and walk of shame. They're both really cute! (I'm also comparing it to the movie, cause I haven't read the book yet). Thanks so much for reading and commenting 🙂 xx
I LOVE the sound of We Were Liars! It's such a shame you weren't a huge fan of the writing style but I'm still super intrigued by the plot, I've never read a book like that! It's definitely one I'm going to be keeping an eye out for when adding to my TBR list. The Way To Game The Walk Of Shame sounds quite familiar but I don't think I've read it, I do love stories set in high school as I'm still a kid on the inside!
