Halloween movies to get you in the mood!
Hello! As promised, I am here to give you a Halloween post. Better late than never, right? I feel like I say that way too often, but it's true! The moment that October 1st hits, it's already Halloween in my eyes. I know loads of you can relate to me. Today I'm going to go over some of my favorite Halloween movies to get you in the Halloween spirit.
Sinister
This is probably one of my favorite scary movies. The music is so intense, and it just has this super eerie feel throughout the entire movie. If you haven't watched this yet, you seriously should. I know they came out with a second movie to this series, but I have not had the time to watch it yet. I heard it didn't really have good reviews though, so I don't have high hopes for it. You can rent it on Amazon here!
Skeleton Key
This movie isn't particular scary. Well, maybe a little bit. It's more of a suspense thriller. This movie isn't particularly new, but I honestly just love it. They actually have it on Netflix, so if you haven't watched it already, this is a good semi-classic. You can rent it on Amazon here!
One Missed Call
I think this is a really underrated scary movie! I thought the plot was pretty good, and it definitely had moments that made me jump. Just look at the scene in the gif above! You can check out the movie here!
Se7en
This is another thriller that is amazing. It's about a serial killer that is murdering people according to the 7 deadly sins. This movie has so many great actors like Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. I honestly love criminals that kill people in the name of religion and sin. The killer is a genius in every meaning of the word, and if you haven't watched it yet, please do. You can check out the movie here!
Twitches (& Twitches 2)
This is such a great Disney movie. It stars Tia and Tamera (the girls from sister, sister). These two twins were separated at birth. One day they stumble upon each other, and not only do they find out that they had a twin sister, but they also find out that they are witches! It's such a cute movie that's also family friendly! You can check out both of the movies here (for Twitches) and here (for Twitches 2).
Hocus Pocus
I decided to put a few light family friendly movies too. This movie used to be one of my favorites when I was younger. It's about three witches who come back from the dead and try to take over the city, one child at a time. If you have never watched this movie before, where have you been? You can check out the movie here!
The Corpse Bride
This movie is a cult classic. Everyone loves this movie and I am no exception. It's such a great animated film. It has songs! I am such a sucker for a movie that has songs, aha. The plot's also really good, which is super important. You can check out this movie here!
The Addams Family
This is another one of my old favorites. I think almost everyone knows who the Addams' family are, so I'm not gonna say too much, but I will say that both of the movies are on Netflix! You can check out this movie here (it's free if you're an amazon prime member!).
Coraline
In the last few years this has become one of my favorites. Every year I try to read the book and then watch the movie. They honestly did such a good job with this story. The movie is family friendly, but I feel like there is so much more underlying themes that I appreciate more as I've gotten older. I assume most of you have watched this movie before, but if you haven't you must! You can check out the movie here.
Monster House
This is another great movie. It's creepy but still totally kid friendly. What can I say? I'm a sucker for animated movies in general. It's about a house that's alive, but you have to watch the movie to find out why! You can check out the movie here.
The Haunted Mansion
I love this movie. I honestly don't know why! Is it because Eddie Murphy is in it? Is it cause Disney made it? Like I said, I can't tell you why. This movie actually is really creepy! At least I think it is. I own this movie on DVD and always try to watch it yearly.
Black Swan
This movie. I honestly have no words. Probably one of the best movies. It's not a horror or thriller, it's more of a psychological creepy movie? I remember the first time I watched this movie, I was in shock and confused. I had to actually watch this more than once in order to get it. I mean I was about 14-15 when this movie came out, so maybe it was because I was too young? This movie is amazing though.
The Ring
This might have been the first legitimately "scary" movie that I ever watched. This movie will always have a spot in my heart. The first two movies are both really good! I haven't gotten around to watching the most recent one, so maybe that's what I'll be doing sometime throughout this week.
Get Out
This is my most recent favorite scary movie. It had the perfect amount of comic relief. I knew I wanted to watch it the moment I recognized the main actor from Black Mirror. He did such a good job in that, so I knew this movie would be no different in terms of his acting. This movie had a fresh plot line which I really enjoyed. I also feel like this movie came at the perfect time, in terms with what was happening in the United States. Probably my favorite Scary movie in 2017.
Disturbia
This was a pretty good movie too! Remember how cute young Shia Labeof was? It's about a boy who was under house arrest and so he would spy on his neighbors. One of his neighbors was especially creepy! It's actually a good movie, check it out.
Harry Potter Series (yes, all of them)
These movies might have been the ones I was the most excited for. I absolutely love anything to do with Harry Potter. The books are amazing. The movies are amazing. Everything. The movies remind me of two holidays, Christmas and Halloween. Especially the first few. If you watch any of these movies, make sure you watch the Harry Potter ones!
The Little Vampire
I don't know if any of you guys remember this movie, but it used to be one of my favorites. I own this movie on VHS, yeah taking it way back, but it was a Disney film that was so cute. The plot was good too.
Scooby Doo Zombie Island
Scooby Doo is probably the classic in terms of always being creepy. When I was young I used to love this movie and the one with the witches! These were scarier than the TV show because it was actual supernatural experiences! (Update: I watched this in 2020, and all I have to say is that this movie is honestly still amazing. I completely forgot how great the soundtrack was!)
I'm going to make it my priority to watch all of these films. They're all good in their own way. Some make me feel nostalgic. Some scare me. All of them put me in the Halloween mood. What are your favorite Halloween movies? Leave a comment below and let me know! Have a wonderful day/night. Sending you all love and positive vibes.
I forgot about the Zombie Scooby Doo movie! I'm not the biggest fan of scary movies, they tend to bother me for months after watching, but I do love the harry potter series and the more cartoony movies on this list. I've been meaning to read Coraline for a long time, I love Neil Gaiman but I've some how never seen or read Coraline.
You definitely have to! Coraline, the book, is a quick read. The movie itself is creepy, but in no way scary. I have a feeling you'd like it. If you do read it, let me know what you think! xxx
Yes I will! I also still need to read a monster calls which you recommended to me ages ago, it's in my to read list!
Hocus Pocus is my favorite! Skeleton Key is a great one too.
I feel like Skeleton Key is so underrated, but it had a pretty good plot and plot twist!
I love Disturbia and Hocus Pocus is my all-time favorite for Halloween! That Coraline gif is insane. I've never seen that before and I'm now even further impressed with claymation - lol. Awesome list! Happy one week until Halloween!! xx
I chose that gif specifically because I felt like most people didn't know how much effort goes into claymation! Thanks for reading Nicky xxx
I am not the biggest fan of Halloween and I cannot stand anything remotely scary. Having said that, I like Black Swan and The Corpse Bride. I cannot remember The Adams Family but I am sure that I liked it as a child as well. xxx
Thanks for reading! Specially since you don't like Halloween, aha xx
Did you get message about your newsletter? xxx
I did! I was just about to email you xxx
Emailed you back love xx
Thank you. I will check it out hopefully tomorrow or this weekend. xx
Great post here Melina. I enjoy a good scary movie. However, I do not like jump scares. Not because I don't like being scared, but because I think it's a cheap way of saying the movie was scary. Hopefully that makes sense. Instead, I love movies that are set up to be so atmospherically scary, that you feel on-edge the whole time because of the realism. To each their own right? Eitherway, I will be using your recommendations for the weeks to come, thank you!
Let me know which ones you decide to watch! Thanks for reading Louis xxx
YESSS! Sinister is up there with one of my all time favourite horror films. I've seen the second one and it sadly doesn't live up to the first film but still worth a watch.
Love all the films in this list!
I'll definitely check out the second one then! Thanks for reading xxx
