my perfect winter day

After the past week we had, I thought we were leaving winter behind and slowly drifting into spring. Yesterday my friend informed me that there was a huge winter storm hitting us today. Now we get these warnings all the time and sometimes it's nothing. But when I woke this morning, the roads were plowed, snow was falling at a fast pace, and all the cars were covered with snow. Now, I normally work half-days on Tuesdays, but since the roads to where I lived weren't paved at all, and there were a couple of inches of snow on the ground, I decided to call out of work and stay home.

I couldn't fall back asleep, especially after my 6:45am alarm went off and I already walked Luca. I was awake, and so I laid on the couch and read. I just finished reading Duet of Darkness and Dreams by LH Blake*, which I really enjoyed (the review of my full thoughts will come out in my what I read in February post). Then, I got up to make myself a latte, and looked out of the window and thought "This is my perfect winter day".

A day where these large fluffy chunks of snow are falling, while I sit with a delicious cup of coffee and reading a good book. A day where it's snowing, and I don't have to drive into work. Where I can appreciate the snow in it's beauty without thinking about the inconvenience it can hold while I carefully drive through it. A day where I will take Luca out in the snow, so he can play with it for a little bit.

Today is a day where I will remain in oversized sweats all day, catch up on reading, maybe make a grilled cheese or two along the way, and play a little bit of Stardew Valley. (I've been obsessed with Stardew Valley again recently, got the Ridgeside Village mod and the Extended Stardew Valley mod, and have been enjoying all the new content while also working on my first "aesthetic" farm. Still deciding whether to marry Ian or Jio. Anyone have any thoughts on this?)

Sometimes I get so caught up in the responsibilities I have, the routine I try to keep on top of, that I forget to just sit and embrace the slow pace and beauty of the day to day. That's one major reason I love reading Michelle's Petite Joys. She reminds me to sit and realize that there are so many little things that happen in our day to day lives that we should appreciate. And today I'm going to do just that. I'm going to sit here and appreciate the snow day.

I curious, what do you consider to be your perfect winter day?

I miss snowy winter days! I was born and raised in Chicago and fell in love with snow when I was a child and had to walk the snowy roads to school, I went to a private school and no bus came to my neighborhood so we always walked even on snowy days! Snow is so magical! I miss it. Now that I live in the South we never get snow and when we do people go crazy down here! haha ♥

I love snow days, especially when I don't have to go anywhere! You'll have to make your way somewhere where there's snow again at some point!

Oh you’re so lucky to get a proper snow day this winter!! We haven’t had any major snowfall in England this winter, and I usually love it for all the same reasons as you’ve mentioned.

I think my perfect winter’s day looks like my favourite British countryside vista, blanketed in tufts of snow. I can wrap up warm in snug jumpers, thermals, cosy leggings and a matching scarf-hat-mittens set, and head out for the morning dog walk with a Thermos of hot chocolate in hand. Afterwards, we’d return home and put the fire on, light candles, draw out the big blankets. I could read for a few hours and bake comforting food – like, a pie or something?! – and hunker down at home. It’s so rare that we can just down tools and stay home, lately, and I’m really sick of having to go out when it’s drizzling rain outdoors.

Oh, and thanks so much for linking to my ‘Open-hearted joys’ series!! Forever glad it resonates with SUCH a big community of people.
